WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE INITIAL VISIT?

During the initial visit, besides checking the patient’s health history, the acupuncturist may check patient’s pulses, look at the tongue and ask more specific questions about the patient’s health and lifestyle. This information is then organized to create a complete and comprehensive diagnosis of where Qi may have become blocked or where the main areas of imbalances. In TCM, illnesses are seen in terms of excesses or deficiencies in various exogenous and endogenous pathogenic factors, and the diagnoses are esoteric, such as "kidney-yang deficiency, water overflowing" or "damp heat in the bladder."  Many of the conventional health professionals who practice acupuncture may have dispensed with such concepts and diagnosis is made in purely conventional terms.

Afterwards, an individual treatment plan will be formed and the patient may receive the initial acupuncture treatment, which lasts around 30 min. In conjunction, certain forms of Chinese self-healing exercises such as Qigong therapy or herbal remedies in forms of extracts, granules or pills may be prescribed to the patient to enhance the results. As mentioned above, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and Qigong therapy are the three primary therapeutic means of TCM.
